What is a Market

The studio focuses on the question, ‘What is a market?’. It undertakes genealogical studies of key shifts on the structures of markets and their resultant typologies. Through an analysis of these shifts, the studio approaches a given swatch of city in Borivali West Mumbai at the intersection of various market conditions; the Borivali Municipal market, the hybrid conditions of malls and shopping centres and natural markets that have emerged as informal transactions. Through an ethnographic study of the different sections of this site, students arrived at relevant contemporary programmes for markets. Through a process of diagraming and pattern analysis from the genealogical studies, students developed a spatial diagram for the new market condition. This diagram will be further detailed into an architectural strategy with material assemblies that produce a new aesthetic imagination for the market.

Case Study

Somwari Bazar

Type : Weekly Market Established in1900's

Adjacent to Chincholi Bunder there is a market called Somwar Bazaar. As the name suggests, this bazaar is active only on Mondays. Chincholi Bunder, is an area that was once a part of the larger trading and shipping activities that were central to Mumbai's growth as a port city. Somwari Bazar, has been an essential part of the socio-economic fabric of the suburban community, providing a platform for trade, exchange, and cultural interactions. The market was established in early 1900’s and was mainly inhabited by local East-Indian Community, Bhandaris and Kolis. During the late 1960s influx of immigrants, mainly South Indians, Gujaratis and mainland Maharashtrians diversified the demographics of the region. The market caters to various needs, including food, textiles, handicrafts, and more. Makeshift stalls or booths are set up using simple materials such as wood, bamboo, fabric, and tarpaulin to provide shelter for vendors and customers. These structures can be easily assembled and disassembled, allowing the market to operate on specific days or times. The absence of permanent walls or roofs contributes to a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere. Vendors arrange their stalls in rows or clusters, creating narrow walkways and lanes for shoppers to explore. Seating areas and gathering spots have been integrated into the market's architecture where people gather to interact, exchange news, and build community bonds.

Problems

  • Inadequate stacking of the building does not contribute positively to the creation of active, vibrant public spaces, leading to a sense of detachment between the building and the community.

  • Stacking programs in isolation from street-level activities or pedestrian pathways hinder interaction and engagement between the building's occupants and the surrounding urban fabric.

  • Stacked programs cast shadows that disrupt the natural light patterns in the surrounding area, affecting the ambiance and comfort of nearby outdoor spaces and buildings.

  • Inadequate infrastructure, such as proper sanitation facilities, waste disposal, affects the shopping environment and impact the quality of service for customers.

  • Different types of transactions require different types of spaces. For example, a bank may need private offices for consultations, while a retail store benefits from an open layout to facilitate product browsing.

  • Rajus kitchen does not has sufficient space for its kitchen therefore it spills onto the narrow corridor causing hindrance.

  • Dattani Trade centre suffers from an absence of proper ventilation, the layout of the building is maze of narrow corridors and cramped rooms, making it difficult for natural light to penetrate, and lack of proper fenestration, with windows gives an impression of isolation from the outside.

  • Grid layout of the floor plan having hard edges hinder interaction and engagement between the building's occupants and the surrounding urban fabric.

Opportunities

  • Proximity to a railway station places the space in a strategic and accessible location, making it convenient for both commuters and visitors.

  • The constant flow of people creates a vibrant market for retail, dining, and entertainment establishments, fostering economic growth and vitality.

  • The space can accommodate a diverse range of activities, such as commercial, cultural, recreational functions, creating a dynamic urban ecosystem.

  • The space can serve as a community gathering point, hosting events, performances, and cultural activities that bring people together catering to the varied demographic of the space.

  • Developing a space near a railway station maximizes land utilization and reduces the need for excessive car parking, optimizing urban space.

  • Existing plinth used as a multifunctional space for storage for sleep vendors as well as a space for pause for sitting.

  • Shops placed near the edge of main road increasing the chances for transactions
