Building Making

Updated: Apr 21

Mentor : Dipti Bhaindarkar

Course Outline

The course aimed to help us resolve detailed development of building design through technical resolution of structural systems, material performance and experience, threshold-enclosure details and process of construction. It further allowed us to bridge the gap between the design from concept to actualization and generate a construction documentation set along with specifications, quantities, estimation and putting together different materials and their assemblies in a manner that is conceptually coherent with the overall idea of the building. The studio attempts to rethink local programmes that have emerged from public activities that will critically craft the space and the built form.

Site : Bimbisar Nagar , Goregaon

Bimbisar Nagar is a suburban locality located in Goregaon East, setup around the late 1970’s as a transit camp colony for the residents relocated from Dharavi as a part of urban planning scheme.  While dubbed into the MHADA Affordable Housing Scheme during the 2000s, Bimbisar Nagar was set up as a transit camp to make space for the people displaced to create space for the expanding city of Mumbai. The area consisted of baithi chawls before which were stacked up into seventeen G+4 buildings when the remaining land was reallocated for MHADA housing for low-, middle and high-income groups. The site is located adjacent to the western express highway nestled among a cluster of MAHDA hosuing societies . It is an open ground acts as an cultural sponge for children and residents nearby , providing a community space for the people. The studio “ Localisation ” attempted to rethink local programmes that have emerged from public ativites in the context of smaller neighbourhoods and their affordances that critically crafted the space and built forms.

Observations

Design Detail And Spatial Detail

Different sizes of plinths affords different activities, portraying the plinth as a public space and exploring how can the plinth or this new topography help in providing a better public space.Creating a new ground line by working on a grid with the help of undulating flat surfaces acting as a community space on the top, while introducing toilet, balwadi below the surface and maintaining a sense of materiality with respect to the site. The plinth has been weaved into holding the services, different activities such as playing, parking, gathering, learning, etc. The plinth thickens - thins, becomes narrow or broad molding itself to provide for the activities. Staircases also tend to emerge from the plinth providing a space for the community to sit and chat.

Construction Process

Construction sequencing refers to the process of planning and organizing the order in which construction activities will be carried out on a project. It involves breaking down the entire construction process into smaller, manageable tasks and determining the most efficient sequence for completing them.

Construction Management and Planning

Construction management and planning involve the strategic oversight and coordination of all activities involved in a construction project from inception to completion. It encompasses a wide range of tasks and responsibilities aimed at ensuring that the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

Construction Documentation

01. Site Development Plan

It provides a comprehensive overview of how the site will be developed, including the layout of buildings, infrastructure, landscaping, and other site elements.

02. Lineout Plan

Two main datum points are established from the retained compound wall between the maidan and school. Centre lines A,B,..., N and 1,2...,13  forms the main Centre line grid for

foundation

03. Foundation Plan

Illustrates and dimension of Raft Foundation for spaces below ground level exceeding a depth of 0.5 M, Isolated Footing and shallow foundation for extended plinth and stage while providing a detailed key section for each type.

04 . Ground Floor Plan

The layout shows the relationship between the built and  unbuilt spaces, major access points, extended spaces. service elements, level differences, etc.

05. First Floor plan

The plan shows layout of upper level floors, green roof trays, open terraces, floorings, etc.

06. Roof Plan

Detailed drawing of the green roof tray system of the building with service catwalks for access.

07. Section

Detailed drawing of a vertical cut through a building or structure, revealing the interior spaces, structural elements, and other features in relation to the exterior.

08. Elevation

Drawing of North and East viewports of the building provides a two-dimensional view of the exterior facade, showing the vertical arrangement of windows, doors, walls, and other architectural elements.

09.Spatial Detail

10. Staircase Detail

Detailed drawing of mono stringer staircase with handrail and connection details.

11. Toilet Detail

Detailed plan and sectional drawings of the public toilet with all materiality , fiitngs , specification, pluming layout etc.
